To commemorate the four-year anniversary of former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick taking a knee during the national anthem to protest racism and police brutality, Nike released the "Kaepernick Icon 2.0 Jersey." The all-black jersey pays homage to Kaepernick, whose "number 7 jersey has become an iconic symbol for progress and positive change."
Kaepernick shared a photo of the new jersey on Instagram.
"Four years ago, I took a knee to protest against systemic racism and social injustice. It was that day that the number on my jersey would come to represent something greater than football, something greater than me. Since then, the number 7 jersey has become a symbol for advancing the liberation and well-being of Black & Brown communities. Thank you for staying True," Kaepernick wrote.
The words "True to 7" are stitched on the inside collar, while a stylized K is featured on the front part of the collar. The jock tag features the same K that is on the collar, along with the Nike swoosh and a stylized image of Kaepernick.
Nike announced the jerseys would go on sale on Thursday (September 17) at 10 a.m. ET for $150. Within minutes, the jerseys were sold out. Jummy Olabanji, a reporter for NBC Washington, tweeted that her friend was ready to go at 9:59 a.m. but was told it was sold out when they tried to pay just two minutes later.
"WOW. The @Kaepernick7 x @nikestore jersey went on sale at 10am. A friend logged on at 9:59. Immediately tried to purchase via Apple Pay and at 10:01 it said sold out."
