The newly formed Alliance of American Football was hoping to have some star players for their inaugural season and had discussions with former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick about playing. According to a report by the Associated Press, Kaepernick demanded a $20 million contract from league officials.

In the AAF, all players are given the same three-year, non-guaranteed, $250,000 contract. Players are free to leave at the end of the season to join the NFL, but if they are unable to find a team to sign with, they must return to the AAF the following year.

The league also reached out to Tim Tebow, who is currently playing minor league baseball after a roller-coaster career as an NFL quarterback. Tebow declined their offer so he could continue playing baseball with the New York Mets organization.

Despite the lack of star power, the AAF managed to have a successful opening weekend, scoring higher television ratings than an exciting NBA game between the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Houston Rockets, while receiving praise from football fans and experts.

Kaepernick, who has not played in the NFL since 2016, is still holding out hope he can play in the league again. He has filed a grievance against the league alleging that the owners colluded to keep him out because of his protests against police brutality and the treatment of minorities in the United States.
