Pioneer’s Delgado Headed to Abilene

MISSION – Joaquin Delgado trains with his dad Jorge in preparation for his college career.

“I always knew since I started that I wanted to play college tennis,” says the recent Pioneer High School graduate. “That’s what I worked hard for every day.”

Joaquin was a standout on Pioneer’s tennis team. His junior and senior seasons, Delgado made it all the way to the Class 5A Singles Championship game. On both occasions, he ended up with a silver medal.

"It was everyday practicing for that moment, that final match. I was very happy to reach the final twice,” said Delgado.

"He's pretty much laid the foundation for our tennis program, “ said Pioneer tennis coach Rick Rivera. “We're only a three-year program, but we already won two district championships on the boys side. He's probably the major reason why."

On the collegiate level, Delgado will play at Abilene Christian University.

He says the opportunity to leave the Valley at play at the division 1 level played a role in his decision.

“They have a very tough schedule. I just felt like I was going to be in a better environment at Abilene Christian,” said Delgado.

Delgado tells CHANNEL 5 SPORTS he hopes to earn a starting spot on the Wildcats’ lineup as a freshman.
